Without It, I’m Nobody
I’ve got friends. I’m always out and people know me. But there’s a dark side to social media that nobody really talks about.
I’m 17 and, if I’m being real, I don’t know where I’m going with my life yet. Social media gives me a purpose, as daft as that sounds.
When I’m at home, I feel like I’m nobody. Then I post something and people like it, comment on it and message me. Suddenly everyone seems to like me. It makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I matter.
The problem is, when I’m not on it, I need it. It’s almost like a drug. You want that next like, that next comment, that feeling that people are noticing you.
Without it, sometimes I feel like I’m nobody.
Status is everything now, especially for lads like me. It’s about who knows you, who follows you, what you’re wearing, where you’re going and how many people are paying attention.
But I suppose the question I’m starting to ask myself is:
if all of that disappeared tomorrow, who would I be without it?
